Dr. Michael Stellefson
Dr. Michael Stellefson is a Professor and Endowed Academic Chair of Human Environmental Sciences in the Department of Health Science at The University of Alabama (UA). His research focuses on three main areas: (1) disseminating analyses of public health data targeting diagnosed Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in disadvantaged adults with low socioeconomic status; (2) assessing web-based technologies that support COPD self-management; and (3) understanding how electronic media can increase health literacy in chronic disease populations with significant health disparities.
Dr. Stellefson has a highly visible scholarly research program with a strong external funding record. He has authored 109 peer-reviewed manuscripts in high-impact scientific journals, such as the Journal of Medical Internet Research, International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Chronic Respiratory Disease, and Preventing Chronic Disease. He has also secured external funding as PI on grants from the Central Appalachian Regional Education and Research Center, American Athletic Conference Research Consortium, and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
Dr. Stellefson's work has been recognized with several national awards, including the American Association for Health Education Horizon Award, Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) Technology Award, and SOPHE Karen Denard Goldman Mentor Award. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Health Education and serves as Program Coordinator for the Ph.D. program in Health Education and Promotion.
Before joining UA, Dr. Stellefson held faculty positions in the Department of Health Education and Promotion at East Carolina University and the Department of Health Education and Behavior at the University of Florida. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, Master of Science in Health Education from Texas A&M University, and PhD in Health Education from Texas A&M University.
