Dr. Michael Stellefson
Dr. Michael Stellefson is a Professor and Ph.D. Program Coordinator in the Department of Health Science at The University of Alabama (UA). His research focuses on three main areas: (1) disseminating analyses of public health data targeting diagnosed Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in disadvantaged adults; (2) assessing web-based technologies that support COPD self-management; and (3) understanding how electronic media can increase health literacy in chronic disease populations with significant health disparities.
Dr. Stellefson has authored 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts in high-impact scientific journals, such as the Journal of Medical Internet Research, International Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Chronic Respiratory Disease, and Preventing Chronic Disease. He has secured external funding as a PI on grants from the Central Appalachian Regional Education and Research Center, the American Athletic Conference Research Consortium, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Notably, he has also served as a Co-I on an R21 grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and Primary Sponsor on a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Individual Predoctoral Fellowship Award (F31) from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).
Dr. Stellefson's work has been recognized with several national awards, including the American Association for Health Education Horizon Award, the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) Technology Award, and the SOPHE Karen Denard Goldman Mentor Award. He serves on the Editorial Board for the American Journal of Health Education and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
Before joining UA, Dr. Stellefson held faculty positions at East Carolina University and the University of Florida. He earned his B.S. in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, M.S. in Health Education from Texas A&M University, and Ph.D. in Health Education from Texas A&M University.
